Today, we’ll recall Islam’s very first fight in the M-1 Global organization.
It took place at the M-1 Challenge 38 tournament, which took place on April 9, 2013, in St. Petersburg. At the time, Islam had won seven of his seven mixed martial arts fights, as well as the title of world champion and World Cup winner in Combat Sambo.
His opponent was an equally intriguing fighter. While Makhachev was 21 years old at the time of his rage debut, Mansour “Tarzan” Barnauld, champion of the French organization 100% Fight, was even younger, just 20. But he also boasted an impressive record of eight wins and only one loss.
Years later, one of them would follow in Khabib’s footsteps to the UFC title, and the other would become the M-1 Challenge champion and win the Road FC Grand Prix. But even back then, in 2013, the technical arsenal and incredible potential of both athletes was clear to see. Their battle promised to be incredibly intense and spectacular.
