In 2011 M-1 Global organized eight-man heavyweight tournament, the winner of the tournament got the status of #1 contender and had a chance to fight for promotion’s title against the champion.

Today we present you one of the quarterfinal fights. That’s when young and promising Estonian giant Denis Smoldarev made his M-1 debut. He was silver medalist of the world combat sambo championship and two victories in two pro MMA fights at the moment.

His opponent was going to be another young and not so well-known heavyweight Magomed Malikov from Gorets team, but he got injured just one week before the event, so Malikov’s teammate Niyazi Safarov took this fight on the short notice. Safarov was the winner of the world pankration cup and national hand-to-hand combat champion.
