In October 2017, M-1 Global celebrated its 20th anniversary in St. Petersburg by holding a grand international tournament, M-1 Challenge 84. The strongest foreign fighters came to the banks of the Neva to fight the best Russian athletes.
A special feature of the eventful card was the fight for the organization’s welterweight champion belt. The favorite of St. Petersburg fans, Sergey Romanov, entered this fight as a challenger. In just a year and a half of performing in the M-1 Challenge range, he turned from a street fighter around football into a well-known professional athlete and one of the main rising stars of mixed martial arts in Russia. He was distinguished by an aggressive and spectacular fighting style, excellent striking technique, and incredible charisma.
And his opponent was the undefeated current M-1 Challenge champion, Alexey Kunchenko. The fighter nicknamed “Wolverine” by that time had a phenomenal record of 16 wins in 16 fights, and 11 of his opponents were knocked out. What is characteristic is that he won his belt a year and a half before the events described, at the same tournament where Sergei Romanov debuted in the M-1 Challenge rage and was not going to give up his title to the daring young challenger.
