2010 was the year then the inaugural M-1 Challenge champions in five weight classes were declared. Contenders were decided by multiple M-1 Selection eight-men tournaments in US, Eastern Europe and Western Europe. The winners of the tournaments had to fight with each other for M-1 Challenge title.
Artem Damkovsky became the winner of the Eastern European lightweight tournament, then he won M-1 Challenge belt in crazy battle against Mairbek Taisumov, the winner of the Western European tournament.
The next step for the champion was to make the first title defense against the winner of the US tournament Jose Figueroa who made name for himself as very technical and aggressive fighter. This fight took place in 2011 in US and it fully lived up to the expectations of the fans.
