Alexander Volkov and Denis Smoldarev fought for the vacant world M-1 heavyweight title at M-1 Challenge 64 event that took place in Moscow on February 19, 2016. Also the first battle between Alexander Shlemenko and Vyacheslav Vasilevsky was in the fightcard of this event.

Denis Smoldarev has been one of the biggest and most successful European heavyweights. He fought and won against such big names as Ante Delija, Maro Perak, Akhmed Sultanov and Shaban Ka and won the title of M-1 Selection HW tournament in process. He has high-level striking technique, great grappling skills thanks to the many years of sambo training, and overwhelming strength and power.

But this time his opponent didn’t come short in size and strength and was far more accomplished as the professional MMA fighter. Two-time Bellator GP champion Alexander Volkov came back to Russia and signed with M-1 Global to add M-1 Challenge belt to his collection and sign with the UFc afterwards.

Two entertaining fighters, both are 6’7”, had total of 42 pro MMA fights in their resume. M-1 Selection champion versus two-time Bellator GP champion, Denis Smoldarev vs. Alexander Volkov with M-1 Challenge heavyweight belt on the line.
