Swedish MMA Federation is authorized to organize the main event of UFC Stockholm in 2013 between Alexander Gustafsson and Gegard Mousasi as a five round fight, ie 25 minutes. The UFC event is in Stockholm at Globe Arena on April 6. It’s Martial Arts Delegation at the County Board of Γ–rebro who made the decision today.

George Sallfeldt, chairman of SMMAF, was very pleased with the decision.

“Being able to arrange a match with the 25min length at home is obviously a big deal for SMMAF. However, it is important to remember that this decision does not mean that the overall match time for MMA matches increases. Even in the future, 3-rounds matches to be the norm for the professional business. “

SMMAF wrote in its application that the match would go between two established, experienced and highly qualified MMA practitioners who are so skilled that they are approaching the level of world title fights.

Martial Arts Delegation at the County Board of Γ–rebro is the authority granting licenses for martial arts competitions in Sweden. The County Board also exercises oversight of the competitions with permission. The delegations reasons for the decision:

“The delegation noted that the exercise of MMA compared to boxing, contains a large number of elements, such as the clinch / wrestling. Those moments are an essential part of the sport, which means that the total violence against the head are generally much smaller in MMA than in boxing. “

With this background and taking into account that there are two practitioners who are at the world level, Martial Arts Delegation approve one match for 25 minutes. The decision was not unanimous. The delegation’s Medical expert neurologist doctor Bjorn Lindvall at the University Hospital in Orebro voted against it.
