March 16, 2012, Ice Palace, St.-Petersburg – The semifinal fight of M-1 Selection heavyweight Grand Prix between Denis Smoldarev (Alexander Nevsky team, 3-0) and Denis Komkin (Versus team, 13-7) was the part of M-1 Challenge: Oleinik vs. Monson event.

Denis Smoldarev was very young and relatively inexperienced in MMA at the time. He differentiated himself from the other heavyweights with huge size, title of the finalist of the world combat sambo championship and crushing striking technique Such fighter was definitely destined for the bright future in MMA. Before this bout Smoldarev had a tough fight in the quarterfinals against Niyaz Safarov from Gorets team.

Denis Komkin is the fighter with big professional experience in MMA and dynamite in his right hand. He made his professional debut in 2003 in the middleweight division. He fought against such opponents as Ansar Chalangov, Stefan Struve, Moise Rimbon and Tadas Rimkevicius. Komkin came back to the ring on November 19, 2011 after one-year layoff and KO’d Ruslan Stepanyan in the fierce two-minute battle.

Two big heavyweights with huge knockout power in their hands, entered the ring to determine the winner who will advance to the final of M-1 Selection Grand Prix.
